A little about me...

My Qualifications & Training as an Herbalist & Health Advocate include:

  • 30 years of research into autoimmune diseases and, especially Multiple Sclerosis, as a patient and patient health advocate

  • Founder of the TurnFirst Foundation, an innovative online patient education and care resource that became part of the Georgetown University Medical Center Department of Neurology. Also developed Grand Rounds Case for the Georgetown Medical School and served as panelist.

  • Certification in Medicinal Botany, Cornell University

  • Completed multiple local and national programs in herbalism, anatomy & physiology, neurology, nutrition, and plant medicine. Currently in two year herbalism training with renowned master herbalist Rosemary Gladstar

  • Member of American Herbalists Guild

Since retiring from my corporate career in 2010 for health reasons, I have studied herbalism and health counseling in a quest to improve my own wellbeing–as well as that of my friends and family. This journey has led me to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where I tend a medicinal garden and tap into nature's powerful wisdom to heal.

I earned a certification in Medical Botany from Cornell University in 2021 and have studied herbalism, anatomy, and physiology with some of the leading herbalists in the country. I am also a certified Master Gardner, beekeeper, and naturalist. Recently, I have begun to share what I've learned to help a wider circle of friends apply natural remedies to support their own healing journeys.

It's been a winding road. . . . .

In my career of 35 years, I was a corporate marketing and communications strategist who shaped and grew multiple organizations. I helped my corporate and non-profit clients—from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups—develop and execute comprehensive marketing, branding, and advertising strategies. I have appeared on CNN, NBC Nightly News, NPR, BBC News, as well as in the New York Times, Fortune, Forbes, Rolling Stone, Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and other publications, radio, and television networks.

  • Founder and CEO of Sightline Marketing—an Inc. 5000 company that was voted one of the “Best Places to Work” by the Washington Business Journal. Sightline won numerous awards for its creative approach to marketing complex businesses and services for clients in the financial, high-tech, engineering, biotech, defense/aerospace, legal, and manufacturing industries—including Allied Capital, Rolls Royce, Carlyle Group, General Dynamics, and Watson Wyatt. In 2005, I was inducted into the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) as one of only a few women in the Washington area at the time recognized for creating a company with revenue over $1M while still under 40.

  • Founder and Director of the TurnFirst Foundation—an innovative online healthcare information center dedicated to providing support to patients newly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. TurnFirst developed an active online community of 65,000+ patients worldwide and provided critical medical assistance to thousands of people every year. TurnFirst was supported by the Gates Foundation and private contributors. In 2019, I donated TurnFirst’s patient program to the Neurology Department at Georgetown University Hospital/ Medstar as a cornerstone for its new MS patient care program along with an endowment of $150,000.

  • Nonprofit Advisor & Consultant—Over the years, I have assisted nonprofits of all sizes achieve their missions through operational development, strategic marketing, and brand development. My clients have included global and national organizations such as Operation Smile and the Diana-Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, Semester at Sea, and the Earth Conservation Corps. I am especially proud of my work to help launch the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund in 2003 following the invasion of Iraq. Marine Corps General Newbold (then Director of Operations for The Joint Staff) asked me to help the Fund prepare for and capitalize on national media attention when it only had $50k in seed money. The fund’s mission was “to provide combat wounded, critically ill, and catastrophically injured service members with immediate financial assistance and quality of life solutions to lift the burdens of their new reality, so that each family could focus on their loved one’s recovery.” I provided over $100k in pro bono media and communications services to staff the Fund’s launch and help it get on its feet. As of 2023, the Fund has raised over $100 million and assisted 30,000 service members, veterans, and military families.

  • Education and Training Expert. My career has encompassed many assignments in the field of education and training. I was the Assistant Director of the International Center for Learning and Competitiveness at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, and the founding Program Director for the New American Schools Development Corporation (NASDC). NASDC was a private, non-profit established as a partnership among Fortune 50 CEOs at the request of President George H. W. Bush. It was the largest private initiative in American history to transform our public education systems. NASDC partnered with the leading educators, researchers, and universities in the country to put more than $250 million into designing innovative educational models during my tenure. I also designed statewide communications and outreach campaigns on major school-to-work transition and education initiatives for the Governors of New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Hawaii to assist them with investing over $150 million in federal funds secured under the National School-to-Work Opportunities Act of 1994.

  • Professor and Guest Lecturer. I created and taught a class on Design-Based Thinking/Entrepreneurship at St. Lawrence University, as well as a Grand Rounds case for Georgetown University Medical School on Multiple Sclerosis. I have served as a guest lecturer on branding, marketing strategy, and entrepreneurship in the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business and at the University of Maryland.

  • Trustee of St. Lawrence University (2012-2022). During my tenure, I led the university Taskforce on the Causes and Prevention of Sexual Misconduct and served as the Vice Chair of the University Admission and Recruitment Committee for nearly a decade.

  • Writer. Throughout my career, I have written extensively both privately and professionally. My letter to Congress in support of Dr. Christine Ford was included in the Houghton Mifflin’s anthology of “The Best American Nonrequired Reading of 2019”.

I graduated from St. Lawrence University cum laude with a B.A. in English and Philosophy and hold an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins University. I am also a graduate of the UMD Master Gardener Program and hold a certification in Medical Botany from Cornell University.
